Jenny's Lemonade

My great-grandmother Jenny (1883-1940) knew what to have on a hot and dry summer day. She left the recipe for a homemade lemonade in her handwritten cookbook. This lemonade is refreshingly lemony and less sweet than the usual lemonade. It looks especially nice if you add a couple of sprigs of lemon balm and a lemon wedge.

Method:

  1. Put the zest of an untreated lemon in a porcelain jug and pour 1/2 litre of boiling water over it.
  2. Add as much sugar as you like and leave covered in a warm place. I used 1 tablespoon max.
  3. Let the liquid cool down and pour it through a sieve.
  4. Add the juice of one lemon and, if necessary, add a little more sugar to taste.
  5. "And if it should be very cold, you put a piece of artificial ice in it", as my great-grandmother wrote in her cookbook.
